When Old Colorado City Library Manager Jocelyne Sansing left for a job in Wisconsin last July, the Pikes Peak Library District named branch supervisor Trish Blakely as the interim head.
Based on past PPLD procedure - such as when Sansing was hired in 2008 - a nationwide search was anticipated to find a permanent replacement.
But it hasn't worked out that way. Blakely, a life-long Westsider who's served at the Old Colorado City branch for the past six years (eight in all), continues as acting manager.
She said the PPLD is in the midst of a district-wide “compensation study," and as a result has not yet acted on the Old Colorado City vacancy.
The study should be complete by March, after which a decision will be announced, Blakely said.
She explained that she'll be fine with whatever is decided. She just likes being employed at the Old Colorado City branch. “I grew up six blocks from this library,” recalled Blakely, who attended Whittier Elementary, West Junior and Palmer High. “I hung out here when I was a kid. That's why I wanted to work here.”
She started with the library district in 2002, spent two years at OCC, was transferred to the Holley branch, then returned to the Westside facility six years ago.
Built in 1904, the historically restored Carnegie library is at 2418 W. Pikes Peak Ave.
Blakely is enjoying her chance at the helm. A first-time event was the Dec. 16 Yule Ball, which had a Harry Potter theme. Planned in conjunction with the branch's teen volunteers, the ball “had an excellent turnout,” she said (including people in costume), and the hope is to bring it back next December.
The library has also been bolstering its collaboration efforts with local businesses, nonprofits and the Westside Community Center; in addition, the branch's “book trike” was in the downtown Parade of Lights, Blakely reported.
