'Celebration of life' for Don Ellis Dec. 8 at Old Colorado City History Center Nov. 28, 2018A “celebration of life" service for the late Don Ellis is scheduled Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m at the Old Colorado City History Center, 1 S. 24th St. Including words from Ellis' family pastor, the event is free and open to the public. Ellis, 78, died of cancer Nov. 9. There was a private cremation ceremony. His wife Merle survives him. A historian, non-fiction author and outdoors advocate, Ellis had been active for many years with the Old Colorado City Historical Society (OCCHS), the volunteer organization that owns and operates the History Center - including editing its newsletter for the past 10 years. He is also widely credited for playing a major role in the city purchasing Red Rock Canyon as open space in 2003. Ellis' obituary in the Westside Pioneer can be found at this link.
