Space Foundation presenting inaugural 'Rocktoberfest' event Sept. 15
The Space Foundation will blast off its inaugural Rocktoberfest Saturday, Sept. 15. Featuring live music, local beer tastings and admission to the foundation's Space Discovery Center, the fundraising event will be from noon to 5 p.m. The center is at 4425 Arrowswest Drive, off Garden of the Gods Road. Food trucks will be on hand. Advance tickets are $35 for one person, $60 for a couple and $70 for a family (two adults and up to six under age 21). A $10 savings offer expires Sept. 5. Beneficiaries of all the proceeds, according to a Space Foundation press release, will be its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programs, the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes Foundation (SADS) and the Pikes Peak Club. SADS are genetic (but treatable) heart conditions that can cause sudden death in young people. The Pikes Peak Club is a community service organization, originally chartered in 1946 as the Pikes Peak Sertoma Club at the Broadmoor Hotel. Discovery Center activity offerings include the Science On a Sphere, Space Gallery scavenger hunts, virtual reality, science demonstrations, chalk art, spray paint art, a pretzel necklace station, puff rocket launching and a Kids Zone. Started in 1983, the Space Foundation provides advocacy and education regarding space travel. Located at the Arrowswest site since 2011, its Discovery Center opened the next year.
