First of 2 summer blood drives at Old Colorado City Farmers Market June 21

The Bonfils Blood Center is hosting two blood drives this summer at the Farmers Market in Old Colorado City in support of Memorial UC Health System.
The first drive will be this Saturday, June 21, the other Aug. 16. The times for both events will be 8 a.m. to noon.
Walk-ins are welcome, but donors can make an appointment by calling 1-800- 365-0006, option 2.
The weekly Farmers Market, which typically draws hundreds of people, is in Bancroft Park. Bonfils will be in the northwest part.
Setting up at the market is an outreach experiment. “We struggle to maintain our blood supply in the summer months,” explained Solitaire Merrill, Bonfils' community donor representative. “Only 4 percent of the population in Colorado donates blood, and it is often a grassroots effort to find them.”
Based in Denver, the nonprofit blood center started in 1943 as part of the United States' World War II effort and now supports patients and hospitals throughout Colorado.
“We ask our donors to give one unit of blood, which has the ability to save up to three lives,” Merrill said. “Donors should be well-hydrated and well-fed before they give blood. They will also receive a summer cooler bag for donating.”
