Thorndale Park will host the annual live-music series called Paint the Town Blue, starting Thursday, June 15.
Running from 5:30 to about 7 p.m., the free concerts will continue Thursdays through Aug. 10, according to Jim Sesters and Marty Gordon of the organizing nonprofit, the Pikes Peak Blues Community. The performers are generally well-known local bands.
Located in the 2300 block of West Uintah Street, Thorndale was chosen after the Bancroft Park bandshell - where the summer concerts had been held for the past 11 years - was damaged in a January fire.
A city-hired contractor started repairs at Bancroft this month, with a finish date estimated in July sometime.
There is no bandshell at Thorndale. According to Gordon, the plan is for bands to play in the park's covered pavilion, facing north (away from Uintah), in the direction of a slightly uphill grassy area where people can set up portable chairs and/or dance.
“This is the first time we've done this and are excited to see the response,” Sesters said.
He did note that in the event of too much rain, the event will have to be canceled, because of the lack of a fallback location. However, a "rain date" has been scheduled Thursday, Aug. 17.
Crowds for the shows at Bancroft typically numbered 100 or more.
Like Bancroft, Thorndale has no off-street parking. Free on-street parking can be found in the adjacent residential area, although attendees are asked to be respectful of the neighborhood.
The PPBC website is pikespeakblues.org. The phone is 290-7190.
Here is the finalized schedule of bands:
       · June 15, Johnny Long.
       · June 22, BJ Estares.
       · June 29, Eric Boa and the Constrictors.
       · July 6, The Verdict.
       · July 13, Jeremy Vasquez.
       · July 20, Old Souls.
       · July 27, Lethal Lisa McCall Band.
       · Aug 3, West Side Rhthym Kings.
       · Aug 10, Erica Brown.
       · Aug 17, Make-up date (as needed).
