Volunteers invited to aid cleanup at Westside Community Center May 6
Sponsored by the Council of Neighbors and Organizations (CONO) and supported by Community Center staff, the event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The center is at 1628 W. Bijou St. The main parking lot can be accessed from 17th Street.
Work will involve “minor landscaping and general cleaning of the building interior,” said Randy Atencio, the center's marketing coordinator. Power-washing walls and tables will be part of the exterior work, along with general raking, mulching and picking up sticks, he elaborated.
“We're looking forward to it,” he said. “I think it will be a lot of fun.”
Also going on will be live music (Curtis Boucher & Friends), local-information booths, vendors, children's activities and lunch for volunteers. The band will set up outside if the weather is warm enough, Atencio said.
The event is titled the “Great Spring Cleanup,” according to a flyer from CONO, which serves as an umbrella group for neighborhoods throughout the city. "Enhance your neighborhood by helping clean up the Westside Community Center," the flyer adds.
One of four community centers in Colorado Springs, the Westside faciliy is different from the others in that it's privately operated through an outreach arm of the Woodmen Valley Church. CONO is also sponsoring cleanup projects at the other locations (Hillside, Deerfield Hills and Meadows Park) as part of its "Neighbor Up" Week.
