OWN committee seeks candidates for board

A nominating committee will be recommending candidates for the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) board. Anyone who would like to meet privately with the committee - which will be making recommendations for the four vacancies on the nine- member volunteer board - is asked to send information to info@westsideneighbors.org or call Board Secretary Welling Clark at 471-4023 by Tuesday, Dec. 27.
The nominating committee consists of residents or residential property owners, appointed by the OWN board, from each of the six districts within the older-Westside area for which OWN serves as an advocacy group.
Candidates are not required to meet with the committee, under the OWN bylaws. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the the annual OWN board election Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at the West Intergenera tional Center.
To be eligible for office, people must be at least 18 years old and live within the OWN Westside Strategy Area or have residential property within the area, the bylaws state.
Four seats will be available in the election. These are (current office-holders in parentheses): District 2 (Dave Hughes), District 4 (vacant), At-large 3 (Joyce Gibson) and At-large 1 (vacant).
The District 2 boundaries are north of Highway 24 between 14th and 21st streets and south of Uintah Street and Manitou Boulevard.
District 4 is north of Highway 24 between 21st and 26th streets, bordered on the north by Uintah Street and northeast by 19th Street.
The at-large seats cover the entire area served by OWN, which is the same as that for the Westside's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
