Pikes Peak Ave. in gas regulator project

Starting around Oct. 19 and up until press time for this issue, Pikes Peak Avenue had been closed off for over a week between Seventh and Chestnut streets. The reason was Colorado Springs Utilities' need to dig into the street to install a gas regulator - a device that controls gas pressure in an area, according to Dave Grossman of Utilities.
The hope was to have the work finished by the middle of this week.
No one in the area has been without service, he said.
The new regulator replaces the old one, which was under Colorado Avenue. A design difference is that the new unit will be next to the street inside a concrete vault, partially above ground, which can be accessed in the future without Utilities having to dig up the street.
This follows a policy that is being implemented throughout the Utilities service area, Grossman said. “In the long run, it saves a lot resources,” he explained.
