OWN Spirit Award nominations will be accepted until Oct. 31

The Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN) wants to reward people for showing “Westside spirit” through property upgrades.
OWN is accepting nominations for its new Spirit Awards contest through Monday, Oct. 31, with the winners to be announced at a reception at OWN's Nov. 10 town meeting.
This represents an extended deadline from what had been announced in the summer issue of OWN's newsletter, the Westside Story.
The awards will be “in recognition of those neighbors and businesses that have instilled community spirit by renovating, remodeling or building new,” according to Sallie Clark, county commissioner and former OWN president who is coordinating the event.
People can nominate their own properties or someone else's. The project needs to have been completed within the last two years. Community leaders will select the winners. OWN board members are not eligible to participate.
Winners will receive a certificate of appreciation and have their names listed in the winter edition of the Westside Story.
The categories are as follows: new construction, remodel/addition, curb appeal and landscaping, historic preservation and signage for business. All but the last category will have awards for both business and residential projects.
       Submissions need to list:
  • The category (only one for each project).
  • Name of owner.
  • Name of occupant (if different from owner).
  • Name of business (if applicable).
  • Name of nominator.
  • Nominator's phone, address and (if applicable) e-mail.
  • Contact information for owner/occupant.
  • Address of property to be considered.
  • Up to 400 words describing why the property should be recognized.
  • Up to 5 photos of the property.
Submissions can be sent in by mail (postmark by Oct. 28) or dropped by the Holden House, 1102 W. Pikes Peak Ave. For more information, call Clark at 471-4023.
