Laden with melons they were unable to sell, farmers from the Rocky Ford area begin the drive home from the Old Colorado City Farmers Market Sept. 15. According to market organizer Frank Schmidt, the current listeria scare has cut the market’s Rocky Ford farmers’ melon sales by about 25 percent. That’s unfair, he said, because the actual problem was contaminated water in Holly.
