What do you do?
Shelley Laur
Where do you work and what is your title? I am the owner and manager of “Swish.” What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for? I have more fun than I deserve – dressing people, giving them fashion advice, laughing and enjoying my customers. I also am responsible for buying, managing and decorating the shop. How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside? The beauty and fashion industry has been my career for 28 years. Hair, make-up and now clothes. I started the business because I’ve always loved history in general. So opening a vintage clothing shop was a natural part of that. I’ve been on the Westside my whole life. What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)? The great people that come in my door! And the vintage clothes are a blast. The education I’m getting on antiques and fabrics from my customers is invaluable. If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be? I would double my space! I’d also hire a cleaning lady and window washer. What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for? I wish I could convince all women that they are beautiful, no matter what their shape or size. Also, since I do the buying, it’s hard to say no to clothes that someone else has loved. What makes working on the Westside special? Westside people! “What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776. |
