Silver Key changes summer fund-raising strategy
Silver Key Senior Services will not hold its annual parking-lot summer fair this year.
Instead, the non-profit, Westside-based agency for the elderly plans a summer-long. Wednesday-Saturday sale in conjunction with the Korean Cultural Center at 3725 Drennan Road on the eastside. The ongoing event will start Saturday, July 9 and will be called Grandma and Grandpa's Trunk and Treasure Sale, according to Silver Key spokesperson Dave Shaffer. The summer fair used to be a one-day event in July - offering items such as donated clothing and furniture and even cars - outside Silver Key's building at 2250 Bott Ave. Last year's fair raised more than $11,000; however, Shaffer said, the preparation costs were so high “it was just break-even for us, even though we sold a lot.” An ongoing sale, in partnership with the Korean Cultural Center, will cost less and have the potential of raising more, he said. But no cars will be sold. Shaffer said Silver Key has gotten out of that business, largely because of insurance. Any donated cars are being sold now through Goodwill Industries, which has a lot for them downtown, he said. Westside Pioneer article |
