Responding to a Colorado Springs City Council call for faster action, City Parks has scheduled a public meeting on Bancroft Park Wednesday, April 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The location will be the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St.
According to a press release, people coming to the April 5 meeting are asked “to provide comments and feedback to the renovation of Bancroft Park.”
Including a bandshell, the 1859 Garvin Cabin, an open-air pavilion, trees and grassy space, Bancroft consists of 1.2 acres on the north side of the 2400 block of West Colorado Avenue in Old Colorado City.
Parks also is encouraging people to respond to a 10-question survey about perceived wants and needs at Bancroft. The survey can be accessed at this link.
Additionally, Parks recently created a project website at this link.
Some suggestions to date have included new public restrooms (for which merchant fundraising has occurred over the last four years), better security and the ability to close off the bandshell except for scheduled events.
Based on discussion at their March 13-14 council meetings, City Councilmembers are considering an investment of up to $500,000 in Bancroft, which has been a city park since the 1920s.
The elected body is looking for ways in particular to reopen the 82-year-old bandshell, which Parks boarded up after the interior was charred by a fire in late January.
After criticizing parks officials for moving too slowly since the fire, council asked Parks to provide not-to-exceed repair cost estimates in time for its March 28 formal meeting, to help guide its spending allocation decision. After that, the next formal council meeting will be April 11.
