What do you do?
Kent Murray
Where do you work and what is your title? Concrete Creations. I am the owner. What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for? In addition to running the business, I create all of our concrete statuary, birdbaths, fountains, tables, benches, planters, etc. on site. For our painted pieces, a talented local artist (also a Westsider) does most of the work. How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside? I am now into my third season. The shop itself first opened here on the Westside in the 50’s. I’m the third owner. What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)? The customers! I like having the opportunity to create something my customers will enjoy! If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be? More exposure. Most of my customers drive by the store regularly, so that is how they know the store exists. Unfortunately, there’s a large population in Colorado Springs that does not know about the arts Old Colorado City has to offer. What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for? The difficulty in succeeding at running my own business. I have friends that do it, so I knew it would be hard, but I had no idea. What makes working on the Westside special? It still has that friendly small town feel. Many new areas of the city continue to be developed. On the Westside, work is focused on restoring the existing structures, and they are improving all the time. Also, with Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon, and Pikes Peak National Forest, the outdoors is right at our doorstep. “What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776. |
