Meet a Westsider:
David McCarty
Profession/Occupation...
a carpenter since ‘76, a jewelry artisan since ‘94, a poet since high school (not much money there). However, health issues have dictated another change in the past few years, final
outcome yet to be determined.
What I like most about the Westside is... the closeness of the mountains and the wildlife that comes with that, the people and the wildlife that comes with that too, the freedom of a live-and-let-live attitude. If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I have lived on the Westside since 1954 and seen a lot of change. Some good, some bad. My wisom is not big enough to try to dictate what changes ought to take place. Let’s just keep it simple and free. A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Lonesome Dove.” You did ask about a good movie I have seen recently, not a recent movie that I thought was good. I'd like to discover... a pill we all could take (myself included) to get rid of this me-first attitude that seems to plague our society. If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... God himself. I have some questions I am sure he has the answers to. Of course I’d be awestruck mute at the meeting, but the relief, peace and comfort of the fact that it’s all true would outweigh the need for answers. The next time I travel, I’m going... When you live on the Westside, you don’t need to travel. People come from all over the world to see what I can see from my front porch. We are blessed to live here. My favorite childhood memory is... Family picnic at the grandparents’ house. The laughter, the ruckus, the fun. Think I got spanked twice that day. Good fun, well worth it. My favorite winter pastime is... sitting on the front porch in the sun with my dogs. Enjoying the view, a book or conversation with a friend. Something good I’ve read is... my mentor gave me a book called, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Read this book and count your blessings. My pet peeve is... Strangers trying to tell me how to live my life... Don’t! If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... Because of health issues, the work capacity the last two years has been almost nonexistent. In all honesty, I’d rather be working. Meet a Westsider” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer.
