What do you do?
Deborah Wallbaum

Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the owner of Deb’s Coffee House in Old Colorado City.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I make sure that all of our guests are provided with an enjoyable experience at Deb’s to make them want to come back again and again. My goal is to provide everyone delicious food and beverages, at an affordable price in a unique atmosphere.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have worked in restaurants for over 20 years. I was previously the coffee shop manager at the Broadmoor, where I worked for nearly 14 years. I opened my restaurant six months ago.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
It is the most exciting thing living the American dream and having your own business, and being able to meet and become friends with so many people.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
Paperwork. It is a necessary evil that can be distracting. I would love to have less of it.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
Taxes, fees, licenses. As an employee, I never knew how much money the government takes from a small business. It is extremely overwhelming.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I grew up on the Westside, I have lived here all my life, I love the people here, this is home to me. When thinking about where to open up my restaurant, there was no question about what part of town it would be located in. I have always been and will always be a Westsider.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
