Meet a Westsider:
Carrie VanVoltenberg

Profession/Occupation... Assistant Director at the The Squash Blossom Gallery in Old Colorado City. Iíve been employed there for three years and recently was made assistant director.

What I like most about the Westside is... I like that I can walk out my back door into the mountains. There's plenty of good hiking/biking trails near my home. I like that the Westside is more diverse than other parts of the city. When I first moved here from Iowa over five years ago I lived on the east side of town and found myself continually driving towards the mountains. I spent most of my time on the westside before breaking my lease and purchasing a home over here. I prefer the ďLeftsideĒ!

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... that it become more pedestrian-friendly. I feel bike lanes are a necessity as well. It was nice to see a pedestrian walkway put in at 24th and West Colorado Avenue although you are risking your life in assuming motorists will see the miniscule blinking lights and yield for you!

A good movie Iíve seen recently is... The movie ďPirate RadioĒ made me laugh a lot. A must-see for music lovers such as myself, and you usually can't go wrong with a flick starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Amid the laughs, this movie made me think about censorship in the media. It's very interesting and amusing to see what kind of music was outlawed just a short time ago in comparison to music, some of which is vulgar, that airs these days.

I'd like to discover... a cell phone that functions fully for longer than a year!

If I could meet someone famous, Iíd like to meet... I prefer to never meet anyone famous that I may admire, ever again. Iíve met my favorite musician and I was awkward and weird. Also, Iíve met one of my favorite comedians. Again, I was stuttering and awkward, and I have blocked out the memory of whatever I mumbled at that moment. I will admire from afar if I can help it.

The next time I travel, Iím going to... Iím planning a tropical vacation in the near future. Still scouting out which island in Hawaii I might visit come Feburary.

My favorite childhood memory is... the trips my family and I took to Colorado for soccer tournaments. We were always busy with sporting events, and Colorado was definitely my favorite destination when traveling. Little did I know that one day Iíd live here.

My favorite winter pastime is... I love snowboarding and canít wait to get up into the mountains sooner than later!

Something good Iíve read is... I loved the novel, ďInto the Wild,Ē by Jon Krakauer. This is one of the most moving, inspiring but tragic true stories Iíve read.

My pet peeve is... Blue tooth headsets! Sure they are very convenient for those who are on the go but I canít begin to count how many times Iíve tried to have a conversation with somebody that was speaking instead to the electronic device coming out of their head.

If I didn't have to work for a year... I would volunteer my time to a nearby pitbull rescue Ė a cause that is dear to my heart. And in the meantime, devote serious time to my art: painting and writing songs.
