Lofts, coffee house envisioned by new owner of long-time Bristol School site
Plans are taking shape for residential lofts and a possible coffee house on the original Bristol School property at 730 N. Walnut St.
Kevin Montford, a military veteran and former Olympic Training Center pentathlete, bought the property in September and has already met with City Land Use Review and the neighborhood about his plans “Everyone was excited about it,” said Montford of a recent neighborhood meeting.
The proposal has not yet been formally submitted to the city. When that happens, the developer “will need to submit a zone change (to PUD [planned unit development]), a PUD development plan and a subdivision plat,” explained Mike Schultz of City Land Use Review.
Because his coffee house would serve beer and wine, Montford would need liquor approvals, Schultz added, but what kind would depend on the envisioned balance of food and alcohol sales.
The property, which is also bounded by Dale and Monument streets and an alley in the back, has sat vacant since the Bijou School's last semester there ended in May 2009. County Assessor records show that District 11 sold the site last February to a group called Bristol Properties LLC for $140,000, which sold it to Montford in September for $225,000.
Montford's renderings show up to 10 lofts on the 1.1-acre property - four in the existing school building - and a coffee house facing onto Walnut.
The Bristol School was at 730 N. Walnut from 1891 to 1973, when the current Bristol was built two blocks to the north.
