Presentation in honor of Laura Belle’s 150th b-day
Laura Belle McDaniel, the best known madam in the heyday of Colorado City brothels, will be featured in a program celebrating her birth 150 years ago in November 1861.
The event will be at the Old Colorado City History Center, 1 S. 24th St., Friday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will be led by Jan MacKell, a Cripple Creek historian/author who has written two books on pioneer-era ladies of the night - “Brothels, Bordellos & Bad Girls: Prostitution in Colorado 1860- 1930” and “Red Light Women of the Rocky Mountains.”
Admission is $3.
“Her detailed program will take us from Laura's humble beginnings in Missouri to her successful business in Colorado City to her untimely and suspicious death in a car accident in 1918,” states a press release from Jo Cervone of the Old Colorado City Historical Society, the volunteer organization that owns and operates the center. “Join us as Jan reveals some little-known facts about the 'good hearted madam.'”
