What do you do?
Manuel Ramsey

Where do you work and what is your title?
I am serving in my fourth year as principal at Bristol Elementary School of the Arts, located on Walnut and Mesa.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I do whatever is needed to help students get a high-quality education. We have a terrific staff, so I usually spend time getting them what they need. I also teach a reading group and math group one day a week and then take care of the business side of things so my staff can focus on instruction.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have been in education for 26 years and have worked in Alaska, California and now Colorado. I have had the pleasure of working on the Westside for 10 years. I was previously principal at Pike Elementary School.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I really value the time I have with kids and trying to make a difference in their lives. Every day is busy and a little bit different. It is always fun to see the students really try and then get the results from their effort and hard work.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I would love to have the school day be about 30 minutes longer. There is so much we are trying to help the kids learn throughout the day and allocating enough minutes to each subject is very difficult. Having a few more hours per week would be a big help to our staff and students.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
Helping kids daily to cope with family and social issues that they go through is at times disheartening. I wish I was an expert counselor and could do more for some families.
What makes working on the Westside special?
The hometown feel of the Westside is so appealing. My favorite day would include hiking Barr Trail and then eating lunch at a great spot in Manitou or Old Colorado City with my wife Debbie. I love the pace of life and the friendly people. Driving past Garden of the Gods on the way to work each day is amazing. I feel so blessed to be a part of the Westside family.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
