Where do you work and what is your title?
       I am the chef and co-owner of FaerieTales BakeHouse and Catering.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
       Our motto is, “making your once-upon-a-time event a gourmet happily-ever- after memory.” I am responsible for doing anything I can to make that happen. From cooking at the restaurant, to menu planning/ design, building strong customer relationships and lots of paperwork!
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
       I’ve worked in restaurants and for catering companies since my first job in high school. We have had our company for nearly eight years, and have been at our location on the Westside since May 2011.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
       Other than being surrounded by food, I get to make other people excited about food too! When people go out, most likely it’s for something special – birthdays, anniversaries, girls’ days out, meetings, etc. I love getting to help make that special! I also love that we have a family business (I own FaerieTales with my mom, even though my 7-year-old daughter is really the boss). A customer calls one of our dining rooms the “family room,” and I like to think it’s because we have a comforting and relaxing atmosphere!
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
       Some days I really just want to spend all day playing with food: making a new dessert, experimenting with new ingredients, planning new menus. But then the paperwork, phone calls, cleaning and not- as-fun business side of stuff gets in the way.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
       All of the silly food questions! Growing up in a “foodie” family, I never realized there were people who don’t cook or care to learn how. Some days that makes me excited to teach them how awesome and easy great food can be. Other days I am baffled by the people that don’t know how to turn the oven on.
What makes working on the Westside special?
       I love the diversity of the Westside! There are people from every walk of life, yet it feels like such a community! There are so many one of a kind places down here to explore all the time!
