What do you do?
Daniel Job

Where do you work and what is your title?
Goodwill Industries and I am an assembler.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I work on the Goodwill work floor, where I assemble various items. We have contracts with companies such as Western Forge and Schlage Lock. I pack keys into boxes, then weigh and label each box. I also complete various other piece-work tasks that include assembling key chains, screwdrivers and other hardware materials. I'm happy to be able to work and earn a paycheck. It makes me feel important to have a job. I also recently received a safety award for being aware of safety rules and informing staff when others were unsafe.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have worked at Goodwill Industries for 14 years, about 10 years on the Westside.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I like my money and earning a paycheck. My favorite job task to complete is racking the keys. I also really like working with Lora, Judy, and Joy (the supervisors) in the back. I like that Joy allows me to help her out and compliments my work. I also like that I have known Lora and Judy for such a long time.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I would slow down and enjoy my day more.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I had to learn to be patient and wait to be assigned work tasks. Now that I understand orders change daily, I'm able to be more patient and flexible.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I have lived all over on the Westside. I am very familiar with the Westside and I know my way around. I know all the bus stops and where I want to go. I also really enjoy attending and participating in the festivals, parades and activities. I feel safe on the Westside. People are very friendly, helpful and kind.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
