First Nations Day at Rock Ledge
A young American Indian dancer looks around during the opening ceremony of First Nations Day at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site Oct. 10. The ceremony had to be held under a tent because of rain. The day included singing, dancing and drumming by the Northern and Southern Plains Indian Dancers and Singers, Southern Ute Shadow Wind Dancers and the Catching Eagle drum group, plus educational programs. Gene Orner, a Westside American Indian who emceed the event, noted that the County Health Department had disallowed the making of Indian fry bread during the event because of a regulation regarding the need for three sinks. ďIíve been eating fry bread all my life and I ainít dead yet,Ē Orner said.
