New Station 5 fire truck drives better, stores better
Fire Station 5 has a new truck. It's a Spartan Rosenbauer model, customized for the Colorado Springs Fire Department, that replaces a 17-year-old machine. With
four-wheel drive, a longer wheelbase and better turning capability than the old one, the new unit should be especially helpful in wildland fires, according to Station 5
Captain Steve Watz.
Additional features include a built-in air mask for the front passenger seat and the capability of carrying more equipment, including a fan to vent smoke, rescue ropes and 650 feet of extra hose.
The Spartan truck was handed over to the station in late September. “So far we're really pleased with it,” Watz said.
