What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I serve Gateway Presbyterian church as office manager and bookkeeper.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
As manager, I do the normal office things (phones, correspondence, keeping track of supplies, etc.), and I also prepare the weekly bulletins, the monthly news-letter (which enhances communication within the church), keep track of attendance, manage our database system and make sure the office is running smoothly. As bookkeeper, I pay the church’s bills and take care of payroll. I also prepare monthly financial reports for the treasurer to share with Session, which is our governing body.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have worked in church offices for the past 10 years. Prior to that, my career mainly consisted of being a dental office manager and then working with three dental management consulting firms helping practices with business matters, billing, staffing issues and dental practice transitions (selling, buying, adding associates). I have worked on the Westside for one year.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I love working with Pastor Dave Markwalder. He is the best boss I’ve ever had, as well as being a wonderful shepherd and all-around nice guy. The members of the congregation are very friendly and welcoming. This makes me (and visitors) feel at home.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I would change the size of the sanctuary (the room where we gather for worship) as I feel we are going to continue to grow under Pastor Dave’s leadership.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I am an on-the-job-trained person so have accumulated various skills during my working life. I have worked in many different offices (even more than mentioned above), so I didn’t feel unprepared when I came here.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I was an “Eastsider” from 1984-1988, then I worked in Centennial, Colo., and moved back to Colorado Springs in 1999. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the Westside better this past year. I no longer have to call my “Westside” friend to get directions. I love driving to work on Mesa Road and taking in our beautiful/ever-changing mountain range. God does great work!
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
