Scarecrow Days gearing for pumpkins
Two annual events by the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) merchants group are coming up Saturday, Sept. 27: Taste of Old Colorado City and Art on the
The following Saturday, Oct. 4, will be the OCCA's Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off.
All are part of the group's annual Scarecrow Days promotional effort, which came into full flower last weekend, as close to 30 merchants between 24th and 27th streets placed straw-filled creations - designed to individual store themes - outside their doors, while slightly less elaborate scarecrows appeared on street corners. Visitors to Old Colorado City can vote for their favorites, with results to be announced Oct. 4.
For $20 a person ($10 for age 18 and under), the Taste event Sept. 27 is a chance to try food samples from “more than a dozen” Old Town restaurants from noon to 5 p.m., according to Tom Beard of the Zeal Group, which handles marketing for the OCCA. Tickets are on sale at participating restaurants.
Art on the Avenue (no set time) will include some art activities along the street, while the Oct. 4 Giant Pumpkin event, featuring large pumpkins from area growers, will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Old Town Plaza (25th Street and Colorado Avenue). Additional pumpkin activities are planned, but details were not available at press time, according to Tom Beard of the Zeal Group.
The merchants in Old Town Plaza said they are planning a pumpkin-carving contest that day.
The Plaza merchants have also organized a new seasonal event Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m., including scarecrow-making instruction/competition and a carnival.
