Giant pumpkins in 6th annual Old Colorado City visit Oct. 2

The Old Town Plaza parking lot in Old Colorado City will take on its sixth annual coat of orange Saturday, Oct. 2 with the arrival of the giant pumpkins.
The free event at 25th Street and Colorado Avenue is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the weighing process starting at noon. Cash prizes will go to the three heaviest pumpkins. During the last three years, the winning weight has been 1,000 pounds or more.
Called the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off and sanctioned by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, it is sponsored by the Old Colorado City Associates (OCCA) business group.
Anyone can enter a pumpkin (no charge), OCCA organizer Melissa Bernal said. However, entrants are responsible for their own hauling.
Children's activities are also planned, including music, balloons, clowns and face-painting, she said.
