Next year now likely for Gold Camp Park opening
There was applause at a Crown Hill Mesa neighborhood meeting last April when a Colorado Springs Parks official announced that a long-awaited 5-acre park would
be built by October.
Alas, that's not going to happen, although a grading contractor began shaping the ground at Gold Camp Park this month and a park developer should be hired within a couple of weeks.
Colorado Springs Parks Development Manager Chris Lieber said the city just fell behind on its park-building schedule. Gold Camp Park, located south of Lower Gold Camp Road about 1/3 mile east of 21st Street, is the fifth city park his department is building in 2006.
“At this point, we'll get as far as we can this year,” he said. “If we can get it done this year it would be great, but if we can't, we'll finish next spring.”
The park is slated to include a field for baseball and soccer, a basketball court, a playground, picnic area, pavilion and hiking trails.
For the neighborhood of more than 300 homes, a delay in construction is nothing new. Developers Chuck and Joann Helenberg donated the park land several years ago, but the city could not find the roughly $600,000 needed to develop the site until this year.
