What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the senior pastor at Bethany Baptist Church.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
Right now, all pastoral duties. Preaching, teaching, visiting the sick, and premarital sessions. I’m a traditional pastor.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
Twenty-two years. Then I spent 20 years in broadcasting (secular) and built the 24-hour live talk American Radio Network. This is a return to my first career. I’ve been here on the Westside for 16 months.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I’m a builder and I like to fix things. Bethany Baptist is in a state of renewal. It used to have over 900 members. We’re hoping to build to 200 by Christmas. I enjoy seeing the growth in church attendance based on people searching for traditional values.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
Sometimes, I’d like to have God work according to my timetable on some projects.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I got my Masters in Divinity (MDiv) at the Denver Seminary, where I learned all phases of pastoral work. I wish course work would have included more preparation for conflict resolution.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I love its history and the commitment to never forget it by those who reside here. The Westside people live in more of a historical context than anywhere else in Colorado Springs. For example, my church was organized as the First Baptist Church of Colorado City in 1889 in what is now the Old Colorado City History Center.
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
