Meet a Westsider:
John Isham

Profession/Occupation... 40 years as canine trainer; owner of Innovative K9 Inc.

What I like most about the Westside is... the history of the city, but there’s also a real sense of freedom here. Everything culminates here – festivals, restaurants, all the activities, car shows, races. Whatever you want to get into, it’s right here.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... There’s always potholes! But other than that, you’re hard pressed to find something negative on the Westside.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... an older movie called “8 Below” – about sled dogs left in the Antarctic. Their owner came back to get them after 8 or 10 months. Good family show. Demonstrates pack orientation and teamwork of dogs in general.

The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... “Don’t try that.”

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... In my line of work, I’d like to meet Dr. Ian Dunbar, a veterinary surgeon and animal behavioralist and a co-founder of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, an international association that I’m a member of.

The next time I travel, I’m going to... I think I’d like to go to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, just because I haven’t been there.

My favorite childhood memory is... It would have to be the dog I grew up with. His name was King. He was the only dog who would ride a sled with me when I was a boy.

My favorite summer pastime is... Fishing and outdoor activities.

Something good I’ve read is.. “The Culture Clash,” by Jean Donaldson. It has to do with integrating relationships between dogs and humans.

My pet peeve is... Not enough hours in the day sometimes.

If I won the lottery, I’d... open up more dog training facilities – a combination of grooming, training, exercising and veterinary clinic.
