Meet a Westsider:
Judy Ekstrom

Profession/Occupation... I am a professional retiree after 30 years as a pre-school teacher.

What I like most about the Westside is... I always have liked the Westside for its tolerant, “live and let live” attitudes.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... It seems to me that that easy-going, tolerant Westside vibe is becoming less so. For example, I think of the current over-concern about medical marijuana dispensaries. It seems like many people have a solution and are looking for problems.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Avatar.” I saw it in 3D and was impressed with its visual lushness. The story wasn’t bad, either.

I'd like to discover... a real, true squirrel-proof birdfeeder!

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Michelle Obama, because I admire her poise and style and I think she’s doing a great job of promoting good nutrition and increasing interest is growing some of our own food.

The next time I travel, I’m going... on a cruise to Alaska to help our daughter and her husband celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

My favorite childhood memory is... being awakened by Mom and Dad on a cold winter night to see the Aurora Borealis from our home in Bozeman, Montana.

My favorite summer pastime is... loafing around on the back porch... Uh, I meant doing yard work.

Something good I’ve read is... “The Lacuna,” by Barbara Kingsolver. Among other things, the book covers the McCarthy era and the anti-communist hysteria prevalent in the country at that time. I found it relevant to today’s political and religious extremism.

My pet peeve is... over-zealous “nannyism” where people think they know what is best for everyone else (see question # 3 above).

If I won the lottery, I would... probably pass out!!!
