Red Rock climbing event

A second annual rock-climbing competition is planned at Red Rock Canyon Open Space Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The competition, occurring in the park's designated climbing areas in the main canyon, is open to all ages and abilities although participants must demonstrate the ability to climb safely outdoors.
The event is being organized by a coalition of local climbing groups, with support from the Friends of Red Rock Canyon and Colorado Springs Parks.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to support the Friends of Red Rock Canyon group.
Prizes will be awarded for first to third place in four male and four female categories. The competition will use the “Redpoint” format, which requires that climbers reach the top on the first try without falling or weighting the rope. Competitors will have five hours to complete as many climbs as they want although they will only be scored on their top ten climbs. Climbers must provide their own belayers and equipment.
The cost to enter is $25, if pre-registered by Aug. 17. Otherwise, the cost will be $30. For more information, call 481-9099.
