Amid schedule, cost challenges, WAAP Coffee with Contractor set Aug. 29
As part of a continuing effort to keep the general public informed, the project team for the Westside Avenue Action Plan (WAAP) will hold another “Coffee with the Contractor” Wednesday, Aug. 29.
Occurring in a time of recently revealed budget and scheduling challenges, the informal gathering will be from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Westside Community Center, 1628 W. Bijou St.
The format consists of informational updates by the contractor (Wildcat Construction) and/or project team members, with questions from the audience welcomed.
The public is invited, and free coffee will be available.
Funded primarily by the sales-tax-supported Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (RTA), WAAP is a $35.5 million project by El Paso County, Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs that is rebuilding Colorado/ManitouAvenue for about a mile and a half west of 31st Street.
”Coffee” meetings are held every few months, with the most recent one in May.
The project started in December 2016, with an original budget of $30.9 million and with plans to finish by the end of this year. However, project leaders had to obtain a $4.6 million funding infusion from the RTA in March (putting the current amount at $35.5 million) and recently announced the need for as much as $5 million more, plus additional time for completion.
