In memoriam: Hope Fonseca
Hope Angel Fonseca, 74, a long-time Midland resident and former president of the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN), died July 10.
A funeral service was July 17, with burial at Fairview Cemetery
Mrs. Fonseca was born Feb. 15, 1938 in Topenish, Wash., one of seven children.
She and her husband Agustin were married 56 years They had 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Fonseca bought their home in Colorado Springs in 1963 and permanently settled here in 1975. Hope's work with OWN in the 1980s included the nonprofit older-Westside advocacy group's newsletter, the Westside Story. Later she started her own paper, the Westsider, which she published for several years.
In 2007, concerned about an increase in crime, Mrs. Fonseca organized a public meeting with City Police in hopes of starting a Neighborhood Watch program for the Midland area (south of Highway 24 and west of 21st Street). “I just want to have it safe, a family neighborhood again,” she said at the time.
