Westside Briefs:
Red Rock beautification day Aug. 10

A Trail Beautification Day is scheduled at Red Rock Canyon Open Space Saturday, Aug. 10.
The Friends of Red Rock Canyon, a citizen group that helps maintain the city-owned park, is asking volunteers to meet in the 31st Street parking lot south of Highway 24 at 9 a.m.
The work will continue until noon.
“We will be working to clean up some of the trails in the open space,” said organizer Dave Dombach. “Bring gloves, snacks and water. We will clean up man-made and natural waste.”

       School-supply drive
The Westside's Gold Hill police station, 955 Moreno Ave., is a dropoff for a citywide school-supply drive, sponsored by Teens with Promise, a local nonprofit.
The goal is to fill 1,500 backpacks with purchased or donated items such as calculators, binders, pens, notebooks, and college ruled paper “to help homeless and disadvantaged teens get ready for the school year,” according to a police press release.
Students receiving help are referred by high school counselors, probation officers, homeless shelters or other nonprofit groups, the release explains.
For more information, call the Teens with Promise offices at 266-0106. The website is teenswithpromise.com.
