Avenue at I-25 closes Sun.-Thur. nights until Sept. 1
Colorado Avenue traffic under I-25 will continue to be closed both ways at night Sundays through Thursdays until Sept. 1.
The closure times are typically 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to Kyle Troxel of project contractor Rockrimmon Constructors.
The closures had been necessary in June and early July to allow construction on the I-25 bridges above the avenue. “We stopped the closures for a while, and that made the businesses there happy, but we have to put the girders up,” he said.
During the daytime, the avenue has two eastbound traffic lanes and one westbound under I-25.
At night, eastbound motorists will be detoured at Walnut Street north, to Uintah Street east, and then to Cascade Avenue south into downtown Colorado Springs. Westbound motorists will be detoured to Cimarron street west, to 8th street north, and back onto Colorado Avenue.
Rockrimmon's goal is to have the Colorado overpass done, and normal four-lane avenue traffic restored, by mid-September, Troxel said. Landscaping and trail work “will take a little longer,” he sadded. “By Dec. 31, we hope to be done entirely.”
I-25's Bijou Street interchange, which has been closed since early January, is slated to reopen with its new bridge in early October, he said.
