OWN crafting lucky 13th for annual picnic at Westside Center
The 13th annual Westside Neighbors Picnic will expand a bit Saturday, July 20, with the addition of a small craft fair.
Sponsored by the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN), the event for the third straight year will be on the grassy area facing the 1600 block of West Bijou Street at the Westside Community Center.
The festivities will be from noon to 2 p.m., with six craft/sales booths scheduled to set up just east of the picnic area and offer their wares between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
As always at the picnic, people from the Westside are welcome to eat for free, with brats and hotdogs barbecued on site. Also offered will be watermelon, lemonade and side dishes - courtesy of OWN as well as business donors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own side dishes too, such as salads, vegetables and desserts, according to OWN President Welling Clark.
Live entertainment will be provided by area performer John Wise and other musicians.
For the second year, the picnic will include OWN's Spirit Awards, an annual presentation, now in its ninth year. The awards are given in different categories to individuals who have upgraded residential or business properties in the Westside Neighborhood Strategy Area (NSA) for which OWN is the city- recognized advocacy group.
A pre-picnic bicycle ride will start at 10:30 a.m. in Vermijo Park. Anyone is welcome to participate. Riders will meet in the parking lot by Vermijo's community garden, said Chris Baum, an OWN board member.
The annual picnic usually attracts close to 150 people.
