Pikes Peak or Bust July 11-14 at N-P
Tickets are on sale for the 72nd annual Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Wednesday to Saturday, July 11-14 at the Norris-Penrose Event Center, 1045 Lower Gold Camp Road.
Competition times are nightly at 7:30 p.m., plus a Saturday matinee performance at 1 p.m.
A sanctioned event in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association tour, Pikes Peak or Bust will have 643 contestants competing for a purse totalling “just over $250,000,” according to spokesperson Nikki Wall.
Competition will be in steer wrestling, bareback bronc riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, bull riding and women's barrel racing.
Pre-rodeo activities outside the stadium will start about three hours beforehand, including mutton bustin' (a sheep ride for kids), a chili cook-off, mechanical bull riding and performing pigs.
Most seats cost between about $10 and $30, with discounts for children. For more information, call the box office at 884-1199.
Pikes Peak or Bust will follow the Ride for the Brand Championship Rodeo, an annual event June 30 that featured working cowboys from various states. The venue for both rodeos is the Norris-Penrose facility, with organization by the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Foundation.
The winning ranch at this year's Ride for the Branch was Prothro-Britton Ranches of Kerrick, Texas. The June 30 rodeo featured working cowboys from 12 ranches competing in six events and attracted close to 3,000 spectators, according to Michelle Roth of Norris-Penrose.
In response to the Waldo Canyon Fire, free admission was given to people who had been evacuated during the fire. Roth said about 150 people took advantage of the offer.
