New martial arts classes starting at West Center
Two new martial arts classes - one for women, the other for boys and girls ages 10 to 17 - will start Monday, June 28 at the
West Center for Intergen-erational Learning.
The classes will be taught by Norbert Grover, founder of the Team Tosa Submission Grappling Academy who won Grand National grappling titles in both the heavyweight and open weight divisions in San Diego, Calif., in 2003..
Both classes will be Mondays and Wednesdays through Aug. 16, with the youth class (cost: $20) from 4 to 5 p.m. and the women's class (cost: $27) from 5 to 6 p.m. The West Center is at 25 N. 20th St.
Along with basic techniques, the goals of both classes are to teach “self-confidence, discipline and respect,” said Grover, who moved to Monument from California last August.
The youth class will focus more on the grappling skills, while the women's class will “teach techniques that work efficiently in street assaults as well as sport competitions,” Grover said.
Both classes will incorporate jiu jitsu, sambo, wrestling and judo, showing how leverage, technique and surprise can counter an opponent of greater size and (sometimes) a high tolerance for pain.
