What do you do?
Scott A. Winter

Where do you work and what is your title?
I work as a water conservation specialist for Colorado Springs Utilities at the Conservation and Environmental Center and Xeriscape Demonstration Garden.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I evaluate, design, implement and manage a variety of existing and potential water conservation programs for residential and business customers, such as toilet and irrigation rebates. I am also responsible for xeriscape and water conservation education which includes the Xeriscape Demonstration Gardens, seminars and presentations, publications and interpretive materials, media relations and community involvement.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have been working in water conservation for three years, but have worked in public horticulture in the semi-arid West since 1996. I have been on the Westside for three years.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I really enjoy helping people conserve water and save money. Water is an incredibly important issue in Colorado and I like to think that I have a positive influence. I also like to learn and be challenged and this job certainly provides opportunities for both.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
Conserving water, particularly in the landscape, usually involves changing behaviors and perceptions not to mention landscapes and technologies. It can take many years to effectively and permanently reduce water use in a community without impacting the lifestyles people are accustomed to. I suppose I wish this change could occur more quickly.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
Cultivating good relationships with many different individuals and groups is essential to success in this job and no one can really ever train you for that.
What makes working on the Westside special?
Working on the Westside makes Colorado Springs still feel like a fairly small town. I'm a small town boy so I like that. Of course, the proximity to Garden of the Gods and the mountains helps too.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
