What do you do?
Suzanne Schorsch

Where do you work and what is your title?
I serve as a volunteer member of the Board of Directors for the Old Colorado City Historical Society.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I manage the bookstore, taking care of the accounting and purchasing. I get help from the docents (tour guides) and other OCCHS volunteers.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I retired a little over two years ago and always said I’d do something with my love of history. Although I worked in accounting during my career, I have a degree in history just because it is my passion – Colorado history, especially. My family has been in Colorado since 1859.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
Every time I am at the museum, new people come in wanting different types of information or photos and/or advice about what to do in our area. Some may be working on family genealogies, some on books and some are just tourists. Each day is different.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
As a volunteer organization, we never have enough finances and time to complete visions we’d like to see completed. The society’s Mission Statement is to educate people and to share our love of local history, yet many people don’t even know what is available at our museum: lectures, events, archives, research materials, not to mention a good time.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
How hard it is to get younger people involved in volunteer work. I did have a young Boy Scout do his Eagle project with me this year... but I’d like to see more young adults become involved.
What makes working on the Westside special?
The Westside is a walk back in history – still a neighborhood, with shops, non-chain restaurants, and people who care about each other.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
