Literacy effort needs volunteers
The Children's Literacy Center is looking for summer volunteers, ages 14 years and older, to tutor children one-on-one in reading two hours a week.
Prospective tutors can pick one night from the following orientation and training opportunities: Tuesday, June 3; Wednesday, June 4; and Thursday, June 5. The times are 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The location is off Fillmore Street at 2928 Straus Lane, Suite 100.
Now one of 50 sites statewide, the nonprofit effort began as a Colorado Springs Junior League project in 1991. The local Children's Literacy Center has been on the Westside for the past two years and works with area schools and businesses on literacy issues.
One motivating factor, according to an agency report, is that 40 percent of the fourth-graders in Colorado fail to meet state reading standards.
