Memorial created for Westsider who died in collision/fire
Westside resident Whitney Hendrickson, 18, who died in a freak collision/gas fire at the 15th Street 7-Eleven in March, has been memorialized at one of her former
schools, North Middle School.
An outdoor pavilion, fountain and landscaping have been installed in an inner courtybard as a result of donated services and money by close to 40 individuals and/or businesses through School District 11's Bridges program. In addition, a student project, a tile mosaic on one of the walls, looks like water flowing down the side of the building, said Darrell MacKay, who was involved with the overall project.
The memorial, which was unveiled at a recent ceremony attended by about 100 people, also recognizes Hendrickson's mother, Clelia Demoraes, who was an active volunteer at the school.
Hendrickson graduated from Palmer High School last year. She had come home on break from her first year at Grinnell College in Iowa when a vehicle smashed another vehicle into a gas pump beside her while she was filling her car with gas March 17.
North is north of the downtown at 612 E. Yampa St. For more information, call the school at 328-2400.
