Gas main project continuing

A gas main project on Cucharras and 12th streets is expected to affect nearby residences and traffic through that area for at least another week.
Started close to a month ago, the work involves replacing old steel pipe from the 1930s and 1940s with modern plastic lines, explained Dave Grossman of Colorado Springs Utilities.
There had been no gas leaks; the project was “proactive,” he said, based on Utilities records showing the advanced age of the pipes there.
The initial part of the project dug into 12th Street between Cucharras and Vermijo Avenue. The concluding phase is the line under Cucharras's 1100 block. A few residences will lose service for about half a day when the new line gets connected, Grossman said, but Utilities field workers will relight their pilot lights.
