Trail volunteer ‘roundup’
Continued construction of the Roundup Trail at Red Rock Canyon Open Space is planned the weekend of May 12-13.
The project, to create an east-west connection across three canyons in the upper reaches of the city-owned property, is a joint effort by Colorado Springs Parks, Friends of the Peak and Friends of Red Rock Canyon.
Volunteer trail workers are needed, with preregistration through the Friends of the Peak website - fotp.com.
The workdays will each last from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A light meal will be provided at the end of each work day.
“The hope is to have the trail connected through” at the end of the weekend, according to Chris Lieber, City Parks development manager.
Work on the Roundup Trail started last year, with about half a mile built so far. When complete, the 1.3-mile multiuse trail will traverse the Sand, Greenlee and Red Rock canyons, providing “wonderful loop opportunities” in conjunction with existing trails in the open space, he said.
