Fundraising under way to bring flagpole to Fire Station 3
A fundraising effort has begun to help bring a flagpole to Fire Station 3 at 922 W. Colorado Ave.
William Hamilton of Troop 3 said his Scout leader suggested the idea as a project to make Eagle Scout, and since then he has talked to a contractor about a plan that would include extensive landscaping and cost $5,000, including labor.
Fire Station 3 Captain Mike Wittry said the Fire Department won't be able to contribute monetarily, but thinks a permanent flagpole would be a worthy addition to the station, especially if it's the result of a Boy Scout/community effort.
The flag and any landscaping would be located in a currently open grass area at the left front of the station. An elm tree had been there, but died a long time ago, Wittry said.
Also involved is the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN), the city-recognized advocacy group for the older Westside. President Welling Clark said OWN plans to help William with community outreach and to serve as an interface, as needed, with business and government entities he may deal with.
William already has some shrub donations; he also set up a collection jar at a booth manned by himself and other Scouts during the Bancroft Park egg hunts April 23.
