What do you do?
Stacy Thomson

Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the owner, along with my husband Vern, of Recess – A Children’s Consignment Boutique.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I manage all aspects of the business, including selection of clothing pieces, helping customers and marketing.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I have worked in consignment/retail for seven years – all on the Westside, the last two years at Recess.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I love working together with other Westside businesses for shopping events and fundraising. I also like the surprise of consignment, with unique items changing the store daily.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I am very happy with my job and wouldn't change much about it! It is fun to work with clothing and kids everyday... two of my favorite things!
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
Nothing could have prepared me for the amount of time and hard work involved in running a self-owned business. As a consignment store, we take in 500 to 700 pieces of clothing weekly. Busy work, but well worth it!
What makes working on the Westside special?
The Westside is just such a naturally beautiful environment. I love that an old, Victorian-style house can be transformed into a funky shop or restaurant. It really sets our shopping district apart from other areas.

“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
