Schedule released for older-Westside water work in 2012, 2013

Colorado Springs Utilities has released a schedule for 11 water-line replacement projects on the older Westside over this year and next.
The locations and tentative dates were announced by Darlene Garcia, the senior project manager, at a public meeting at the Westside Community Center April 11.

20th Street was shut off this week between Bijou and Platte Avenue for a Colorado Springs Utilities project to replace a failing water line. It's the first of several such projects planned on the older Westside in 2012 and '13.

The longest project (about four weeks) is slated to take place from June 11 to July 13 in the alley between 17th and 19th streets, north of Kiowa and south of Bijou. It is one of four projects planned between now and August.
Already under way is a project, which started April 9 and is expected to continue through April 19, on 20th Street between Bijou Street and the alley north of Platte Avenue.
Three others will occur in September and October, with the four in 2013 not yet given specific dates.
On planned projects such as these, Garcia said Utilities employees contact residents in advance, even making schedule changes as needed. For example, one affected household had planned a wedding reception. “We won't work that day,” she said.
Another Utilities effort is not to leave people out of service at the end of the day.
The decisions on where to make replacements were based on analyses of pipes that had leaks previously. Age is not the most important factor, Garcia said. She pointed out that some of the cast-iron pipes from the early 1900s are still in service, outlasting counterparts that were made in the 1960s and '70s. The older pipes generally have thicker walls - making them less vulnerable to corrosion - and they also appear to have been made of better metal, she said.
The project list follows, with tentative dates:
April 9-19 - 20th Street, between Bijou Street and alley north of Platte Avenue.
May 7-30 - Alley, between 17th and 19th streets and Pikes Peak Avenue and Kiowa Street.
June 11-July 13 - Alley, between 17th and 19th streets and Kiowa and Bijou streets.
July 23-Aug. 7 - Alley, between 22nd and 23rd streets and St. Vrain and Uintah streets.
Sept. 23-Oct. 3 - Espanola Street, between Seventh and Chestnut streets.
Oct. 1-9 - Platte Avenue, between Walnut and Spruce streets.
Oct. 15-22 - Boulder Street, between Walnut and Spruce.
First quarter - Bijou and 23rd streets alley main (between Bijou and Platte, 23rd and 25th).
First quarter - Chestnut alley main (between Seventh and Chestnut and Washington and Fontanero).
Second quarter - Kiowa and 21st streets alley main (between Kiowa and Pikes Peak and 21st and 23rd).
