Grand opening for martial arts facility April 17
A grand opening for Self-Care Arts, a new facility addressing martial and healing arts, will be Saturday, April 17 at 1626 W. Colorado Ave.
Including demonstrations, the free event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Martin Kelly, the business owner and instructor.
Holding black belts in Judo, Jujitsu and “Bruce Lee-style” Kung Fu, Kelly listed the professional certifications he has earned, which include Chen style Tai Chi, Bagua, Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Judo, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Jujitsu. He also holds bachelor of science degrees in physical education and sports science, with additional martial arts studies in Beijing, he said, and has taught professionally since 1982.
In Colorado Springs, before setting up his Westside location, he taught classes at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital, Kelly said.
Under the name of Self-Care Arts LLC, Kelly purchased the two-story property at 1626 W. Colorado Ave., remodeling its roughly 1,700 square feet to accommodate a martial arts area on the second floor and living quarters and massage office on the first floor. In massage, Kelly said he uses “myoskeletal techniques” and is also certified in qigong healing.
Classes are available in various disciplines from ages 4 and up.
Kelly explained that he chose the Westside for his dojo because of the nearby open space areas (Garden of the Gods Park and Red Rock Canyon Open Space), the Westside's overall beauty and the ease of getting around on foot. “Out on Powers Boulevard, you step outside and get run over,” he quipped.
Self-Care Arts is normally open in the evenings Monday through Thursday and all day Saturday.
