Meet a Westsider:
Shirley Wick

Profession/Occupation... I own the Old Town GuestHouse (a boutique B&B) with my husband Don in historic Old Colorado City.

What I like most about the Westside is... its ambience, which intermingles the history of the area with small businesses from fashionable boutiques to fantastic restaurants to great galleries. I enjoy patronizing the other locally owned businesses and sending our customers out to do the same.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... perhaps having the shops stay open later on Fridays and Saturdays. So when people come here to dine, they could also wander the avenue and shop and get to know the area better, especially during the winter months.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “The Silver Lining” – the acting is great and really depicts how a person with bipolar issues can lead a full and successful life.

I'd like to discover... the joy of swimming with the dolphins (it’s on my bucket list).

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... a Nobel Prize winner.

The next time I travel, I’m going... Hawaii. I love snorkeling, walking along the beaches, or just sitting and reading a good book while the ocean breezes bring a calmness of serenity and relaxation. Then, of course, there’s the wonderful fish entrees they offer, and watching the whales.

My favorite childhood memory is... Christmas Eve at my sister’s house, where there was always fantastic food, music, laughter, love and fun (‘til the families grew too large to fit).

My favorite spring pastime is... hiking, finding a quiet place to read or just daydreaming beside a quiet stream.

Something good I’ve read is... “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” by Alexander McCall Smith. It’s about a small detective agency in Africa that intertwines Africa’s history and culture of the area while solving mysteries.

My pet peeve is... people who are rude or disrespectful to one another. I believe it is always best to treat others as you want to be treated.

If I didn’t have to work for a year, I would... I’d volunteer at my church and/or a favorite charity, read more, hike more and travel (Alaska’s also on my bucket list). BUT top of the list is spending more quality time with our grandson and granddaughter!
